Snap This! A Guide To Snapchat

This is for the 35+ year old social media user: It's OK to admit that you don't "get" Snapchat.

I know.

You're 35+ and got shit to do.

But you're reading this blog, so I suspect you want me to impart some Snapchat wisdom on you.

I can do that.

Snapchat is a text messaging app with cool filters. That's it.

You're old. That's really all you need to know.

Of course, Snapchat is more than a just text app with cool filters.

The real question is, exactly "who" is it more too?

On any given day, Snapchat reaches 41% of all 18 to 34 year-olds in the United States.

But why?

It's simple.

Because you're old ass ain't on it.

Seriously. Facebook is at critical mass with moms, dads, aunt, uncles and teachers. Twitter? Well, Twitter is Twitter and Instagram is getting crowded too.

Just remember the age range, 18-34. Those are our formative "fuck off, i'm doing me" years before any real responsibilities.

So, you're posts about kids, grandkids, mortgages and all other old people crap is of no interest to them.

Plus, no youngin' wants to hang with old people on social media or real life, for that matter.

Now, if you're a marketer: it's a whole other ball game.

It's not sorcery Jon. It's Snapchat. And yes, we know: Winter is coming...Like a broken record, this guy...

Anywho...

These are the Snapchat tools every marketer-advertiser needs to know: (bold titles are linked to Snapchat's case studies for each tool...very informative..)

Snap Ads offer the best in mobile video ads with the choice to add an interactive element below. Snap Ads always begin with an up to 10-second vertical, full screen video ad that appears in the context of other Snaps. You can also give Snapchatters the choice to swipe up and see more, just like they do elsewhere on Snapchat. Swiping up reveals extended content like a long form video, article, app install ad, or mobile website. (Source: Snapchat Internal Data)

Sponsored Geofilters are tiny pieces of art that always make an impression. When Snapchatters in the location(s) of your choice take a Snap, they’ll be able to see your Geofilter and use it to explain where, when, and why they took the Snap. Whether your campaign covers a specific location, a major event, or every mall in America, Geofilters uniquely allow brands to take part in the hundreds of millions of Snaps sent between friends each day on Snapchat. In the US, a single National Sponsored Geofilter typically reaches 40% to 60% of daily Snapchatters. (Source: Snapchat Internal Data)

Sponsored Lenses offer a completely new take on brand activation, offering not just an impression, but “play time” — the time Snapchatters spend playing with the interactive ad you’ve created. To activate Lenses, Snapchatters simply press and hold on their faces. Some Lenses include prompts like “raise your eyebrows” to trigger an animation, adding a fun twist to the experience. And when you’re finished playing, it’s easy to send Lenses to a friend or post one to your Story. On average, Snapchatters play with a Sponsored Lens for 20 seconds. (Source: Snapchat Internal Data)

There's just one thing you need to know:

Snapchat advertising is expensive as shit right now.

Yup. If you're not a major brand or company: you're fucked, for the moment.

It was the same with Instagram ads in the beginning but they eventually opened up advertising for small business budgets.

Glad you like it 80's computer kid.

So that's it, I explained the who and why of Snapchat and gave my marketing peeps the down low on how to advertise.

What the else were you expecting?

Seriosuly tho, I ❤️ you all and I hope this helped.

I gots to go...
